Vietnamese Phin Coffee Brew Guide
What You Need:
- Vietnamese Phin Filter
- Coarsely Ground Vietnamese Coffee
- Sweetened Condensed Milk (optional)
- Boiling Water
- Ice Cubes (for iced coffee)
Method:
Step 1: Set Up the Phin:
- Place the Phin filter on top of a sturdy cup or glass.
- Remove the top screen and add 2-3 tablespoons of coarsely ground Vietnamese coffee into the filter.
Step 2: Pre-wet the Coffee:
- Pour a small amount of boiling water (about 1/4 inch high) into the Phin.
- Allow the coffee to bloom for 20-30 seconds.
Step 3: Assemble the Phin:
- Place the top screen onto the coffee grounds, gently pressing to flatten the coffee bed.
- Screw on the press piece to compress the grounds slightly.
Step 4: Brewing:
- Pour boiling water into the Phin until it's nearly full.
- Put the lid on and let the coffee drip through. This process may take 4-5 minutes.
- For a stronger brew, you can add more hot water after the initial drip.
Step 5: Sweeten (Optional):
- If desired, add sweetened condensed milk to the brewed coffee in your cup. Adjust the amount based on your preferred level of sweetness.
Step 6: Stir and Enjoy:
- Once the dripping is complete, stir the coffee and condensed milk thoroughly if added.
- If you prefer iced coffee, add ice cubes to the cup.
Optional Tips:
- Experiment with different coffee-to-water ratios to find your preferred strength.
- Adjust the grind size for a different flavour profile; coarser for a lighter taste, finer for a bolder one.
- Use traditional Vietnamese robusta coffee for an authentic experience.
Cleaning:
- After brewing, disassemble the Phin and rinse each part thoroughly.
- Allow the Phin to air dry between uses.
