South Indian Filter Coffee Brew Guide
What You Need:
- South Indian Filter Coffee Set (with a Dabara and Tumbler)
- Freshly Ground Coffee Beans (preferably a dark roast)
- Filter Coffee Powder
- Hot Water
- Fresh Milk
- Sugar (Optional)
Method:
Step 1: Prepare the Coffee Decoction:
- Measure the required amount of coffee powder based on your taste preference. A common ratio is 1:3 (1 part coffee to 3 parts water).
- Add the coffee powder to the top section of the filter.
- Pour hot water over the coffee powder, allowing it to slowly filter through. This forms the concentrated coffee decoction. Let it drip completely.
Step 2: Boil Milk:
- While the decoction is brewing, heat fresh milk in a separate vessel. Traditionally, South Indian filter coffee uses whole milk for a rich flavour.
- Allow the milk to heat but not boil. Maintain it at a warm temperature.
Step 3: Mix Coffee and Milk:
- In the Dabara (small metal cup), add 1-2 tablespoons of the concentrated coffee decoction.
- Pour an equal amount of hot milk into the Dabara. Adjust the ratio based on your taste preference; some prefer a stronger coffee flavour, while others like it milder.
- Optionally, add sugar to taste.
Step 4: The Dabara-Tumbler Tradition:
- Holding the Dabara at a height, pour the coffee back and forth between the Dabara and Tumbler (a taller metal glass) with a smooth, flowing motion. This not only blends the coffee and milk but also cools down the beverage.
- Repeat this pouring process a few times until a frothy layer forms on top of the coffee.
Step 5: Serve and Enjoy:
- Pour the well-mixed and frothy South Indian filter coffee into a cup or another Tumbler.
- Sip and savour the rich, aromatic flavours of this traditional South Indian beverage.
Optional Tips:
- Experiment with the coffee-to-milk ratio to find your preferred strength.
- For a stronger decoction, let the coffee powder steep for a longer duration.
- Adjust the sugar according to your sweetness preference.
